Feng Shui and Pets
By Sallie Tsui Sien - Practising Consultant in Feng Shui

Feng Shui is about the environment, the building, people and time. The surrounding environment of our living space plays a very important role in the Feng Shui of a building / property. Feng Shui is about analysing the quality of energies within our physical space by assessing the state of the external surrounding environment.

Until recent times, animals were domesticated primarily in order to work for their owners and were regarded as property rather than as a best friend to humans. Given the amount of space and time our pets share with us in our home, it is only natural that their presence has to be taken into account when we apply Feng Shui principles to our home.

Like children, when pets share our living space, they contribute their fair share of clutter and some of this poses health risks to their owners. Make sure:

Feng Shui is about the environment, the building, people and time. The surrounding environment of our living space plays a very important role in the Feng Shui of a building / property.  Feng Shui is about analysing the quality of energies within our physical space by assessing the state of the external surrounding environment.

Their rubber ring or chewy balls do not trip you up.
Tidy up their toys and place them in a box within the pet’s reach.
Remnants of old chewed up bones are not left lying around the house.
Food bowls are washed and put out of sight after every meal.
Allow fresh air into the room to get rid of their smell, especially after a rainy day.

Not only do we have to make sure that they have a good diet and lots of exercise, it is important that they are not imprisoned in confined spaces.  The mental health of our pets is important and problems often occur when pets are locked up alone all day.

Caged animals, especially in children’s bedrooms, can create unfavourable energy. They are best located elsewhere and the cages kept well maintained and clean.

Recognise the need to ensure that the colours and patterns of the beddings of our pets are in harmony with the elemental energies of the locations. Below is a table of the colours associated with the eight locations:

Directions Colours Patterns
East and Southeast    green   Rectangles
South     red / orange / burgundy Triangles
Southwest and Northeast yellow / beige / terracotta Squares
West and Northwest Grey / White   Circles / Round
North Black / Blue Wavy
In fact, pets are one of the best ‘activators’ of energies in Feng Shui.  Energies are activated by sounds and movement.  This could range from a pendulum chiming clock, a fan, a television, stereo /radio set, a lively fish tank or a dog.

If you have a particular set of beneficial energies in a sector, and so far as practically possible, use a corner of it for the dog or cat basket. The presence of your pet will enhance the benevolent energies of that sector. Equally, if the dog’s presence occupies a sector influenced by malevolent energies, you would want to place the dog somewhere else.

Should a cat choose to sleep elsewhere other than the designated basket, it could be that there is an area of geopathic stress that it is attracted to.  Dogs are different and would stay away from such stress areas.
